Whitsunday Regional Council Mayoral by-election

The Electoral Commission of Queensland acknowledges the Traditional Owners of country where the by-election is being conducted, and their connection to land and community. We pay our respects to all Traditional Owners, and Elders past, present and emerging.

A by-election is being held to elect a new mayor of the Whitsunday Regional Council.

Election day is Saturday 13 August 2022.

Early voting is from Monday 1 August 2022 to 12 August 2022, excluding weekends.

Voting is compulsory for people enrolled to vote in Whitsunday Regional Council area.

Fines may apply for a failure to vote.

The ECQ employs temporary staff to deliver elections. No elections experience is necessary. All temporary election staff are paid and receive training and support.

There are different types of casual roles available, with most work on election day. However, some roles are also available before and after election day.

You can vote before election day from Monday 1 August to Thursday 11 August 2022 9am-5pm, excluding weekends and Friday 12 August 9am-6pm.

Polling booths are open 8am-6pm:

  • Hamilton Island Resort, Hamilton Island
  • Bowen PCYC, Cnr Hay St & Queens Rd, Bowen

COVID safe measures will be in place at polling booths including extra cleaning and sanitation.

Postal vote

Postal vote applications closed at 7pm on Monday 1 August.

If you applied for a postal vote, you can complete it as soon as you get it. Make sure you:

  • tear the ballot paper from the declaration envelope
  • follow the instructions and number the boxes on the ballot paper
  • put your completed ballot paper in the declaration envelope
  • seal the declaration envelope and sign it before a witness. Your witness has to sign it too
  • put the declaration envelope in the reply-paid envelope and post it to the ECQ.

You must complete your vote by 6pm Saturday 13 August 2022.

The ECQ must receive it by 5pm Tuesday 23 August 2022 so your vote can be counted.

Telephone voting

Telephone voting will be available to people who are eligible.

For the Whitsunday Mayoral by-election, telephone voting is available during early voting from Monday 1 August 2022 to 12 August 2022 (excluding weekends) and election day on Saturday 13 August 2022.

It involves two phone calls:

  1. To register for telephone voting, phone 1300 912 782* and select option 1
  2. To cast your vote, phone 1300 912 782* and select option 2

Registrations close 12pm Saturday 13 August 2022.

All telephone votes must be completed by 6pm Saturday 13 August 2022.

At this by-election you can number one, some or all of the boxes on the ballot paper in the order of your choice.

Start with 1 (one) for the candidate you most prefer.

This is the optional preferential voting system, and is used as required by the Local Government Electoral Act 2011.
