Townsville City Council Mayoral by-election

A by-election is being held to elect a new mayor in Townsville City Council. Election day is Saturday 15 November 2025.

This is a full postal by-election. Voting materials will be mailed to all people enrolled in Townsville City Council after the close of candidate nominations on Thursday 16 October.

If you used a different postal address than your residential address when you enrolled to vote, your ballot pack will be sent to the postal address.

The timetable for the by-election is set in accordance with the Local Government Electoral Act 2011. The election period began following the publication of the notice of election.

  • Notice of election – Tuesday 7 October 2025
  • Close of electoral roll — Monday 13 October 2025
  • Candidate nominations – Tuesday 7 October to 12pm on Thursday 16 October 2025
  • Election day – Saturday 15 November 2025
  • Postal vote completion deadline –Saturday 15 November 2025 at 6pm
  • Postal vote return deadline – Tuesday 25 November 2025 at 5pm

Nominations close at 12pm on Thursday 16 October 2025.

All candidates must complete the free training course So you want to be a councillor? conducted by the Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers.

This course must be completed within 6 months of nominating which means if you already completed the course before nominating for the March 2024 local government elections, you will need to retake it and get a new certificate of completion.

The course is fully online and will take about 90 minutes to complete. After finishing the training, you will want to download your certificate of completion. The certificate contains a reference number that must be included on your nomination form.

This is a full postal election and voting materials are mailed to people enrolled to vote in this council area.

Postal voting materials will be printed and sent to voters' enrolled postal address after the ballot paper order draw on Thursday 16 October 2025.

If you don’t receive your postal voting materials or need them sent to an alternate address, please contact the ECQ on 1300 881 665.

You can complete your postal vote as soon as you get it. Make sure you:

  • tear the ballot paper from the declaration envelope
  • follow the instructions on the ballot paper
  • fold your ballot paper in half to conceal your vote and place it into the declaration envelope
  • seal the declaration envelope and sign it before a witness. Your witness has to sign it too.
  • put the declaration envelope in the reply-paid envelope and post it to ECQ.

You must complete your vote by 6pm Saturday 15 November 2025.

The ECQ must receive it by 5pm Tuesday 25 November 2025 for your vote to be counted.
