Torres Strait Island Regional Council

The local government election for the Torres Strait Island Regional Council was extended by one week, to Saturday, 23 March 2024. This is due to challenging weather conditions which hampered mobile polling services by helicopter to some communities.

Arrangements were made to ensure all electors had the opportunity to cast a vote with the following arrangements:

  • mobile polling was extended in 5 communities—Iama (Yam), Masig (Yorke), Poruma (Coconut), and Ugar (Stephen) from Monday, 18 to Wednesday, 20 March 2024
  • early voting was extended at Thursday Island on Thursday, 21 and Friday, 22 March 2024
  • postal voting was extended to 6pm on Saturday, 23 March, with counting extended to close of business on Tuesday 2 April 2024
  • telephone voting closed on Sunday, 16 March.

The election was extended through a formal change to the election day for this council under section 38 of the Local Government Electoral Act 2011, as notified in the Government Gazette.
