Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council Councillor By-election

The Electoral Commission of Queensland acknowledges the Traditional Owners of country where the by-election is being conducted, and their connection to land and community. We pay our respects to all Traditional Owners, and Elders past, present and emerging.

A by-election in the Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council was held in January 2022.

COVID-19 measures

A COVID-safe plan was in place at the polling booth. This included things like extra cleaning and sanitation.

Voters were advised to:

  • check in using the Check In Qld app or ask election staff to help check in
  • stay 1.5 metres away from people who are not from their household
  • wear a mask indoors unless they have an exemption/exception that is listed in the current health directive. (Children under 12 did not have to wear a mask).

There was hand sanitiser at the polling booth. Voters were welcome to bring their own pen or pencil to vote.

  • Candidate nominations open - Monday 13 December 2021.
  • Close of electoral roll – Monday 20 December 2021.
  • Candidate nominations close – Thursday 23 December 2021, 12pm.
  • Ballot paper order draw – Thursday 23 December 2021, 2.30pm.
  • Postal vote applications close – Monday 3 January 2021, 7pm.
  • Early voting - Friday 14 January 2022, 9am to 6pm.
  • Election day – Saturday 15 January 2022, 8am to 6pm.
