Aurukun By-election

A by-election for a councillor of the Aurukun Shire Council will be held on Saturday, 31 October 2020. The by-election is a result of the resignation of a current sitting councillor. View the notice of election PDF (0.15 MB).

The Aurukun by-election will be held on the same day as the State general election. Aurukun electors will be able to vote in the by-election and State general election at the same time.

The ECQ will deliver the Aurukun by-election in accordance with advice from Queensland’s health authorities with a range of protection measures in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Candidate nominations open - Saturday, 3 October 2020.
  • Close of electoral roll - Saturday, 10 October 2020.
  • Candidate nominations close - Monday, 12 October 2020, 12pm (noon).
  • Ballot draw - Monday, 12 October 2020, 2.30pm.
  • Postal vote applications close - Monday, 19 October 2020, 7pm.
  • Early voting opens:
    • Monday, 26 October 2020 (Cairns, for electors voting outside the council area).
    • Friday, 30 October 2020 (Aurukun).
  • Election day is Saturday, 31 October 2020.
  • Preliminary (unofficial) counting of the vote will commence after 6pm on election day, Saturday 31 October 2020.
  • Official count will commence from Sunday, 1 November 2020.

Other ways to vote

If you can’t get to a polling place, there are other ways for you to vote:

Postal vote applications for the Aurukun by-election and State general election have now closed.

Postal ballot papers are being sent now. If you have applied for a postal vote, vote, sign, have it witnessed and mail it as soon as possible. You must vote before 6pm on election day, 31 October and the ECQ must receive it by 10 November 2020 to be counted.

Telephone voting is only available for eligible voters. Telephone voting takes some time and involves many steps. This process ensures the integrity and secrecy of the vote.
