Registering a political party

To register as a political party, the Secretary of your group or organisation needs to apply to the Electoral Commission of Queensland. The Commission can only accept applications from eligible political parties. The Parties Registration Handbook outlines matters your organisation must comply with to be eligible for registration. The Handbook has all the information you need about registering as a political party.

To apply to register as a political party, download and complete the Application to register as a political party , and send or deliver it to the Commission with the necessary supporting documentation.

Once registered a party may seek to amend the Register of Political Parties by: -

• changing the party’s name
• changing the party’s registered abbreviation
• entering a registered abbreviation (if the party has no registered abbreviation)
• changing the registered officer’s address
• changing the name of the registered officer

Deputy Registered Officer 

A Registered Officer of a political party may appoint a Deputy Registered Officer. To appoint a Deputy Registered Officer, download and complete the form Nomination of a Deputy Registered Officer of a Registered Political Party, and send or deliver it to the Commission.

Party agents 

Each registered political party must appoint an agent. The party’s agent is responsible for submitting the party’s annual return and if eligible, for making election funding claims for the party. To appoint an agent, download and complete the form Notice of Appointment of an Agent by a Registered Political Party, and send or deliver it to the Commission.

Each of the attached forms can be completed online then downloaded and signed before sending or delivering to the Commission.
