About ECQ

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) was established to run Queensland elections.

The Commission is an independent and impartial body. Its main functions include:

  • administering Queensland electoral laws
  • conducting free and democratic parliamentary and industrial elections
  • reviewing local government boundaries.

The Commission is made up of 30 full-time staff members, 89 Returning Officers (for each of the State's 89 electoral districts), and one Assistant Returning Officer for the electoral district of Cook. Returning Officers are employed on a part-time basis to manage electoral events when they occur. In addition, around 8000 casual staff are employed by the Commission to help conduct a large-scale electoral event, such as a State general election or referendum.
